Occupy Victoria Motion Could See Campers Stay For The Long Haul

www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http VICTORIA -- For twelve days protestors have been building their camp in Centennial Square, as part of the Occupy Victoria movement. What started out as a handful of tents has grown to more than sixty. There is now a full service kitchen, library and free store, but how long they will be able to continue may hinge on a vote at city council. Councillor Philippe Lucas is presenting a motion which would allow the peaceful demonstration to continue, as long as an open dialogue and ideas about social change are being discussed. Under city bylaws the day camping is illegal but the campers have been allowed to stay on compassionate grounds. Now some are saying they've overstayed their welcome and it's time to dismantle the operation. The cost so far as been minimal to the city, roughly eight-thousand dollars for hydro, water and security, but that doesn't include policing costs. Meanwhile the Downtown Victoria Business Association is worried the protest may ruin a planned outdoor ice rink set to occupy the square over the Christmas holidays.
