All about camping with the family

Holidays with the family are always great. Although far flung destinations have their appeal, there are few holidays to beat camping for an all round rewarding experience. Though heading for the fields is attractive, there are a few things for the novice to take heed of before setting up camp.

Ahead of anything else, it is important to buy the right tent. This will, quite literally, be your home from home, so here you really should go for the best you can afford. Brands to look for include Vango, Outwell and Gelert, but whichever you select, bearing in mind a few basics is important.

There are a number of golden rules associated with tent buying. Firstly, you should always go for something slightly bigger than you need; you will always need the extra space. Secondly, it is important that you see the tent fully erected before buying, to make sure it is what you need.

Finally, practice erecting it.

As fun and exciting as camping holidays are, being woken in the early hours of the morning by one of your children complaining they are cold is best avoided. As such, selecting the right sleeping bags is another all-important decision.

However, the wonderfully diverse weather in the UK is a little sneaky, so providing a fleece as an extra layer to have to hand is good. Staying comfortable is essential, and in this regards an air bed is handy to rest the sleeping bags on. Having any smaller children positioned between you and your partner will stop them rolling off in the night or choose a larger air bed.

Wherever you go camping, rain is to be expected at some point and, more than this, enjoyed. Running around in the rain, getting mud everywhere and generally messing about is great fun for kids; big and small alike. Having to clear up the mess afterwards is not so much fun though so mindful of this, having sturdy wellies and waterproofs is always going to be a good move.

Another piece of equipment to have to hand which will prove invaluable is a head torch, which will help everyone go to the toilet in the dark with all hands free. Toilet roll is also an essential, though something that is often forgotten by first timers.

Other basic equipment to be sure you have packed and secured include a kettle, sturdy plastic cutlery and crockery, towels, bedding and pillows. If you are going to do a lot of cooking yourself, keeping things simple is the best way forward, and having a sharp knife is essential.

A camping holiday with the whole family is great; allowing children the freedom to go and make new friends, explore and, which is particularly nice for you, thoroughly tire themselves out.
